The Experience
A set meeting point in town, blankets and hot drinks at a dark site a short drive out, from $33 per person.
Book the tour, then the room, and let the pickup rules decide the street you sleep on.
Pick a night near new moon and book it with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The tour's meeting point or pickup zone then tells you where to sleep.
Central San Pedro is covered by every tour. Operators that collect from hotels cap it at a few kilometers or exclude the outer ayllus by name.
Pickups run from about 7:30 pm in winter to 10 pm in summer, then it is 15 to 30 minutes by van to a dark site outside town.
Tours last two to three hours including transfers. You are dropped at your accommodation or a central street when most of San Pedro has gone quiet.

Where to Stay
Central town, the ayllus, the lodges with their own observatory and the airport city, with the pickup rules that decide between them.
Sleep in central San Pedro de Atacama. Every stargazing tour on this site collects in town, and the operators that offer hotel pickup cap it at a few kilometers from the center, so a room a short walk from the plaza keeps all nine tours open to you. The ayllus, the farmed oases that ring the town, are quieter and darker from your own patio, but confirm pickup before you book there, because operators either exclude the outer ayllus by name or ask everyone to meet in town. A few lodges with their own observatory change the calculation, since the telescope session comes with the room. Calama, the airport city, is only for a very late arrival or an early flight. The Llama Stargazing experience, featured on this page, meets at a set point in town and drops you near Ignacio Carrera Pinto 530.
San Pedro is a small adobe town at about 2,400 m (7,900 ft), and the stargazing meeting points sit a few blocks apart. Llama Stargazing meets at a set point in town that depends on the option you book, Observatory Licanatay at Paso Turístico or Restaurant Tara, and the aire libre astro tour at hotels in town or at Tocopilla 517. The Owner Experience, Atacama Dark Sky, Andestellar and Layana Travel pick up from your San Pedro accommodation, and The Roofless Experience does the same within a few kilometers of the center. Caracoles, the main street, stays lit and busy until about 10 or 11 pm.
Terrantai Lodge, at Tocopilla 411 a few steps from the plaza, has central heating and a small pool. It is not on the booking site we link to, so book it direct.
The ayllus are the ancestral agricultural oases of the Lickanantay communities, a ring of small farms and lanes just outside the center. Ayllu de Sequitor is about 3.5 km from the tourist center, Coyo about 6 km, and Solor around 10 minutes by car. Sleep out here and the sky from your own patio is noticeably darker than in town.
The catch is pickup. AstrotourChile includes hotel pickup except from Ayllu de Coyo, Tulor, Cucuter, Solor or Quitor, and The Roofless Experience serves accommodation within a few kilometers of the center. Llama Stargazing and Observatory Licanatay meet in town wherever you sleep, so from the outer ayllus you are walking or taking a taxi each way. The access roads are only partly lit; one guest at a guesthouse in Ayllu de Larache described a 20-minute walk to the center, 10 minutes of it on an unlit road. After 11 pm, use a taxi or walk in a group.
If the stargazing comes with the room, the pickup rules matter much less. Three lodges around San Pedro have their own telescopes, and a fourth is named without a link because it is not on the booking site we use.
Tierra Atacama, in Ayllu de Yaye 1.9 km from town, has a dedicated stargazing space with telescopes, pools and a spa. The professional observatories only open by day, as our observatory tour guide explains, so a lodge session is the nearest thing to a night at an observatory.
Stays around San Pedro, with the town center in the middle and the ayllus around it.
| Area | Pickup covered? | Walk to the plaza | Sky from your room | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Central San Pedro | Yes, by every tour | A few minutes | Street-lit | First visits, budget stays, late returns |
| The ayllus | Partly; some excluded, others capped at a few km | 20 minutes or more, partly unlit | Dark from the patio | Quiet nights, longer stays, drivers |
| Lodges with observatories | Check with your operator | 10 minutes by car, or in town for Awasi | Own telescope on site | Stargazing with the room, all-inclusive trips |
| Calama | No tour collects here | About 1 h 15 min by road | City lights | A very late landing or an early flight |
El Loa airport (CJC) at Calama is the nearest airport, about 95 to 100 km from San Pedro and 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by road on Route 23. Transvip has a counter inside the terminal, and a shared van seat cost about CLP 15,000 per person when we checked in October 2026. Roadworks at km 86 to 93, near San Pedro, run to about mid-2027 without reported closures.
No stargazing tour on this site collects in Calama, and a night there is one fewer night under the desert sky. Sleep in Calama only if your flight lands too late for the transfer or leaves so early that a dawn drive from San Pedro is unworkable. Otherwise go straight through.
Book the tour before the room. All nine tours on this site have free cancellation up to 24 hours before on GetYourGuide, so lock a night in first and let its meeting point or pickup zone tell you which streets to search. Aim for the darkest week, roughly four days either side of new moon, which falls on 10 October, 9 November and 8 December in 2026. Our full moon guide covers the brighter nights, and the prices guide compares what each tour costs.
Heating is the thing to check in a listing. Average overnight lows in San Pedro drop to −0.5 °C (31 °F) in June and −0.8 °C (31 °F) in July, and even in January and February the nights only average around 9 °C (48 °F). Adobe rooms hold the cold, so look for heating in the room description before a winter stay; Hotel La Casa de Don Tomás lists heating in all rooms and Terrantai central heating. Our cold weather guide has the monthly figures.
Stay near where you will be dropped. Pickups run from roughly 7:30 pm in winter to 9 or 10 pm in summer, and a tour lasts two to three hours including transfers, so a summer tour can return close to midnight. Tours with hotel pickup bring you to your door; Llama Stargazing drops you near Ignacio Carrera Pinto 530, so a room nearby saves a late walk. Our Llama Stargazing breakdown has the meeting points by option.
Bring cash. ATMs in San Pedro can run dry at busy weekends, so withdraw Chilean pesos in Calama or Santiago before you arrive. Tips are optional and not included on most tours. And at 2,400 m, drink water, go easy on your first day and keep the alcohol modest.

"Amazing experience, guide was very knowledgeable, great snacks"

"Amazing tour, very professionally organised and Alejandro was extremely approachable and informative."

"Really good experience, instructions for pick-up were clear, driver was good, he even waited 15 mins for 2 guests who were lost, went back to pick them up later. The stargazing was lovely, the guide was really knowledgeable and explained things clearly. I would suggest to show the constellations on an iPad or something to help guests being able to see them more clearly on the sky. They also took two photos of guests and sent them via email a few days later along with some lovely photos of different objects on the sky. We looked terrible on our photos though, it's a shame they don't let you retake them. They also had some drinks which was a nice touch. Overall very well organised and great experience, we learned a lot. Totally recommended!"
"Luca is just fantastic !! so much info, such a competent person!!"
"Loved it. My favourite tour I did in San Pedro. Magical!"
"Great tour! The tour is geared towards beginners in astronomy and star gazing, so expect a lot of basic knowledge being explained. Overall a great experience, can only recommend! Suggestion for improved experience; *Download "Star Walk 2" - A free app that shows you the constellations in the sky realtime! *In camera settings increase/maximise exposure - Your pictures will have much better clarity. The stars and nebulae will be clearer than what you can see with your own eyes! Furthermore; The astronomer uses a laser pointer to point out constellations. I went in winter/ 12 june. It got very cold, however blankets and wine + snacks are provided."
"An excellent tour - I would highly recommend. The views were incredible. The guide spoke excellent English and was really well informed. We also got to look through different telescopes and had a photograph taken. The provision of complementary snacks and drinks at both the beginning and end of the experience was a really nice touch, as was the campfire. It is very cold - they give you blankets but bring all the layers you have!"

Central San Pedro. Every tour on this site collects in town, the meeting points are a few blocks apart, and operators that pick up from hotels cap it at a few kilometers from the center. The ayllus are darker and quieter but you need to confirm pickup first.
Some do, some don't. AstrotourChile includes hotel pickup except from Ayllu de Coyo, Tulor, Cucuter, Solor and Quitor, The Roofless Experience serves accommodation within a few kilometers of the center, and Llama Stargazing and Observatory Licanatay meet in town. Ask the operator before you book a room in an ayllu.
Nayara Alto Atacama in Ayllu de Quitor and Explora in Ayllu de Larache each run nightly sessions on a 16-inch telescope at their own observatory. Awasi Atacama, in town, drives guests to its observatory at Tulor, and Tierra Atacama has a dedicated stargazing space with telescopes. See the lodges section.
Average overnight lows are below freezing in June and July, −0.8 °C (31 °F) in July, and around 9 °C in January and February. Adobe rooms hold the cold, so look for heating in the listing before a winter stay. Our cold weather guide has the monthly figures.
San Pedro. No stargazing tour collects in Calama, and the airport is about 95 to 100 km away, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by road with a shared van counter inside the terminal. Sleep in Calama only for a very late landing or an early flight.
Most tours with hotel pickup drop you at your door. Llama Stargazing drops you near Ignacio Carrera Pinto 530 in town, so a central room means a short walk. Caracoles stays lit and busy until about 10 or 11 pm; after that, take a taxi or walk in a group. Compare the tours to see which include pickup.
