San Pedro de Atacama: Astro Tour with big telescopes

5.0 (20 verified reviews)

About This Experience

Aire libre's tour suits travelers who want a purpose-built setting and a guide in German, English, French or Spanish, and couples or families who like the idea of a semi-private or private night. It starts from $67 per person and holds a 5.0 rating from 20 reviews. That headline price is the semi-private option. When we checked in October 2026, the private option was around $141 per person for two adults.

After hotel pickup, a van takes about 15 minutes to an outdoor observation area laid out in the shape of a Chakana, the Andean cross, with a pool of water at its center. Indigenous cultures of the Central Andes watched the stars reflected in water, and here you can do the same. The listing photos show a ring of chairs with blankets around the pool and large Dobsonian telescopes set around the edge.

Your certified guide explains both the Andean and the classical Greek and Roman readings of the stars and constellations, starting with the naked eye before moving to high-end professional telescopes for the most interesting objects in that night's sky. A light-sensitive camera takes photos of you with the stars, and while you wait you can sip hot tea, hot chocolate or a glass of red wine with a snack. There is a toilet on site.

The stargazing itself lasts about 2 hours, after which you are dropped back at your hotel; Tocopilla 517 in town is the alternative pickup and drop-off point. Dress warmly, as desert nights get cold and drop to around freezing from June to August. If clouds or a storm cancel the night, the operator tries to reschedule or gives a full refund.

What an amazing experience. Our guide was very attentive to making our experience magical. He kept an eye on the weather and moon patterns and adjusted the excursion to allow for best viewing. The location itself was very nicely organized and thoughtfully set up. There was coffee, tea, hot chocolate and cookies. Two telescopes set up for viewings. Highly recommend!

We had a fantastic experience with Lasse. He is very knowledgeable and knows a lot about our beautiful universe by heart. The location the viewing takes place is very well thought out and suites the viewing wonderfully. We found the telescopes to be really great to view with your own eyes some of the parts that were casually explained just an hour ago.
