Atacama Dark Sky: Into Our Universe

This tour is built around one guide and a handful of guests. Your guide picks you up at your hotel in a 4x4 and drives out into the Salt Mountain Range, the Cordillera de la Sal, to a spot called Vallecito. You recline in a comfortable chair while the guide talks you through the southern sky with a green laser, mixing in stories of the people who shaped astronomy.

Then comes the telescope station, with wine or navegado (hot wine in season), hot drinks and snacks. The telescope is a smart telescope that points itself at planets, nebulae and galaxies and captures them in color, so you see what you were only glimpsing by eye. The deep-sky images go to you the next day by WhatsApp or email. The night ends with a short walk for photos against the Milky Way, facing the galactic center from April to September and its outer edge from October to March.

The listing caps the group at four, unless it’s a special case, and lists a private astronomical tour for four to six people. The price is per person, so two people pay about $372 between them. Bring your own warm layers, as warm clothing is excluded, though blankets are available. The site is not wheelchair accessible because of the uneven desert ground, and weather cancellations are refunded or rescheduled. Our Atacama Dark Sky breakdown has more on the night.

aire libre: private, with big telescopes

aire libre’s tour is the one to pick if you want to look through large telescopes yourself in private. The listing’s $67 from-price, rated 5.0 from 20 reviews, is for the semi-private option. The private option was around $141 per person for two adults on a real date when we checked in October 2026.

You are collected from your hotel and driven about 15 minutes to an outdoor site laid out as a Chakana, the Andean cross, around a water mirror that reflects the stars as Andean cultures once watched them. A certified guide covers both the Andean and the Greek and Roman constellations, in English, German, French or Spanish. Then come high-end professional telescopes, a light-sensitive camera for pictures of you with the stars, and tea, hot chocolate or wine, for about two hours of stargazing. Our aire libre breakdown covers the options in detail.

The Roofless Experience: The Private Universe

The Roofless Experience runs a premium small-group tour from $65 per person, rated 4.9 from 131 reviews, with two 16-inch telescopes, hotel pickup, thermal blankets and a professional portrait. Its listing also invites you to ask about The Private Universe, a private version for proposals, honeymoons, anniversaries and other celebrations. No price is published for it, so ask the operator. The regular tour runs only when the moon is less than half lit, so ask whether the same applies to a private night. Our Roofless breakdown covers the regular tour.

Newer private listings

GetYourGuide also carries a few newer private stargazing listings for San Pedro that have no reviews yet. We don’t link tours without a track record, and we’ll add them here once guests have reviewed them.

What a private tour doesn’t change

A private night buys you space, time and attention, but the sky is the same one the shared tours see. Cloud still cancels, and the moon still washes out the Milky Way, which is why both Atacama Dark Sky and The Roofless Experience plan around it. Book your private night early in your stay, so a weather cancellation leaves room to reschedule, and check the forecast the day before.

Cold doesn’t change either. Atacama Dark Sky excludes warm clothing and asks you to bring layers even in summer, and in June and July nights in San Pedro drop to around freezing. Our guide to how cold Atacama stargazing gets covers what to pack.

Per-person pricing adds up for groups. Four friends on Atacama Dark Sky pay about $744 between them, so a larger group may get better value from aire libre or from a shared tour.

Who a private tour suits

A private night makes most sense for a proposal, honeymoon or anniversary, for keen photographers who want time at the telescope without a queue, and for anyone who would rather ask questions than share a guide with a full van. If your priority is the view and the price matters, the shared tours on this site start from $31 per person; our tour prices guide sets out what each price level buys.

Timing matters as much for a private tour as for any other. Atacama Dark Sky pauses three days either side of the full moon and The Roofless Experience runs only below 50% moon, so check the full moon dates before you plan a special night. "This was a wonderful night, guided by Vicente, who is super smart and super enthusiastic. He really knows his stuff and absolutely loves what he does! You have myriad choices for night sky tours in Atacama. If you are debating, choose this one!!! We chose this tour because it offered a small group size (3-4) and reclining chairs, but we got soooo much more. This would be a good tour for novices and experts alike. Thank you, Vicente!"
