Price Guide

What an Atacama Stargazing Tour Costs

Every tour on this site by price, and what each step up buys you.

A stargazing tour in San Pedro de Atacama costs from $31 to $49 per person on GetYourGuide for the shared group tours on this site, $65 to $67 for the premium small-group tours, and roughly $141 to $186 per person for a private or near-private night. The lowest price of the tours we cover is Observatory Licanatay’s Stargazing & Andean Astronomy at $31, rated 4.7 from 782 reviews. Paying more buys bigger telescopes, more photos, better food, hotel pickup and a smaller group, not a different sky.

Two real-date notes from when we checked in October 2026: Llama Stargazing’s $33 is its cheapest option, and its English stargazing tour was around $38 per person on an actual date. aire libre’s $67 is the semi-private option; its private option was around $141 per person for two adults.

$31 to $38: the classic shared tour

This is where most visitors book, and the two most-reviewed tours on this site sit here. For $31, Observatory Licanatay gives you an astronomy specialist, professional telescopes, a poncho, coffee, tea or red wine, and a photo by email. Its second half covers how Andean cultures read the Milky Way, including the dark constellations formed by the gaps between the stars. Llama Stargazing, from $33, adds pisco sour, juice and a snack, and its Astrolunar option suits nights near the full moon.

You meet both in town and ride about 15 minutes out. AstrotourChile, from $38, is the cheapest tour on this site with pickup from your accommodation, though it excludes the outlying ayllus such as Coyo, Solor and Quitor. Our Licanatay breakdown covers the value pick in full.

$43 to $49: more photos and a fuller spread

The middle tier spends its extra money on photos and food. Owner Experience’s Astronomical Excursion, from $46, splits the group by language and runs a separate night photo session while the others are at the telescopes, then finishes with wine, pisco sour, cheese and salami. Andestellar’s Pro Guided Stargazing, from $49, brings a 12-inch telescope plus a smart telescope, a specialist astrophotographer, three photos each and lounge chairs with blankets. Layana Travel sits at $43 with two or three photos and drop-off at your accommodation.

If the portrait under the Milky Way is the souvenir you care about, this is the tier to look at. Our photo tour guide compares them in detail.

$65 to $67: premium small groups

The Roofless Experience, from $65 and rated 4.9 from 131 reviews, is about the telescopes. Two 16-inch instruments for deep-sky viewing are the largest named on any listing here, and the operator runs only when the moon is less than half lit, so you never pay premium money for a washed-out sky. Hotel pickup, thermal blankets, wine and snacks and a professional portrait are included.

aire libre’s Astro Tour with big telescopes, from $67, is semi-private at that price, with hotel pickup, an observation site laid out as an Andean cross around a water mirror, and guides in English, German, French and Spanish.

$141 to $186: private nights

Above $100 you are paying for privacy. aire libre’s private option was around $141 per person for two when we checked. Atacama Dark Sky’s Into Our Universe, from $186 per person, takes four to six guests at most by 4x4 into the Salt Mountain Range, with reclining chairs, a smart telescope that captures galaxies in color and deep-sky images sent the next day. Our private stargazing guide compares the private options.

Which price level suits you

  • Under $40: your first stargazing night, a tight budget, or a trip where you want the stories as much as the telescopes. Observatory Licanatay and Llama Stargazing have the most reviews of any tours on this site.
  • $43 to $49: when the photo under the Milky Way is the souvenir you want, with more food and drink on top.
  • $65 to $67: when the telescopes are the point, or you want a smaller, semi-private group.
  • $141 and up: a proposal, an anniversary, a photography night or simply a guide to yourselves.

None of these prices buys a visit to a professional observatory. ALMA’s public visits are currently suspended, and research observatories never let visitors look through their instruments anyway. The night tours around San Pedro are where you actually put your eye to a telescope; our observatory tour guide explains the difference.

Booking in town vs booking ahead

Group astronomy tours booked locally in San Pedro are reported at around CLP 25,000 to 30,000 per person. The trade-offs are cash and certainty. Tours sell in Chilean pesos, and ATMs in San Pedro can run dry on busy weekends, so bring cash from Calama or Santiago. Booking ahead locks in a spot on your chosen night with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and most operators reschedule or refund if they cancel for weather.

Budget a little extra for tips, which most listings exclude and which are optional. Whatever you pay, dress for the cold; our guide to how cold Atacama stargazing gets explains why. Compare the top picks side by side on the homepage comparison, or check Licanatay availability.

"The tour was awesome! On time, great transportation and our tour guide, Salvador, was amazing and super friendly! We learned a lot about constellations and the solar system. We were able to see a lot of shooting stars. We got a picture of us with the milky way as a background. Great keepsake. I Highly recommend this activity 🥰"

Daniela Chile

"Stargazing experience just outside of San Pedro with a van-ful of people. Guide was knowledgeable about formation of stars, astronomy, etc. They had a telescope of sorts that you could use many times to look at the moon, stars and star clusters. At the end, they serve coffee / tea / red wine and have the opportunity to take a professionally shot photo with the night sky. Overall night is very cold but they get you up and moving, but note to dress warmly. Be flexible as they may push timing for optimal weather conditions. I personally wish they talked more about the local mythology around the constellations / about the constellations more as someone who lives in the northern hemisphere."

Sofiia Ukraine

"Incredible experience. We had the excursion with Salvador, he is extremely knowledgeable and his passion is contagious. Highly recommended."

Claudia Italy

"Excellent! Our tour guide, Salvador and driver was knowledgeable entertaining and very friendly. We’ve never seen so many stars. And to top it off, we were offered wine, tea or coffee and we get a picture. It was a first class experience. If we were staying another night we would do the tour over again!"

Amy United States

"Great tour, the guide Salvador was very knowledgeable about the stars and the universe - it’s clearly his passion. Recommend to do. Dress warmly as it gets cold after the sun sets, especially in winter."
